File Permissions

documentation for the dotCMS Content Management System

File Assets can receive permissions in one of two ways:

  • Permissions can be inherited from a “parent” folder, or
  • Individual permissions can be set on the file (breaking inheritance from the folder the file is located in).

To view the permissions set on a File Asset, edit the file (from either the Site Browser or Content Search screen), and select the Permissions tab.

Permission Inheritance

Permission Inheritance from System Host

Below is an image of a file that is inheriting all its permissions from the “System Host”. This means that permissions on this file, “parent” folder, and host above it, are inheriting permissions directly from the Role permissons themselves set at the System Host level.

*For more information on setting permissions on dotCMS objects from the System Host, please see the documentation on Role Permissions.

Setting Individual Permissions

While editing a file, clicking on the Permissions tab and the “Permission Individually” button will stop any role inheritance coming from higher up the permission hierarchy and allows for permissions to be set on the file itself.

*For more information on setting permissions on dotCMS objects from the System Host, please see the documentation on Role Permissions.
